ATV Maintenance Tips

Tweaking Your Exhaust

Many do-it-yourself UTV and ATV owners change the exhaust on their vehicles, and for good reason: a higher-quality exhaust system will create much more power. But changing the exhaust on a carbureted ATV, UTV, quad brings on some secondary issues that need to be addressed in order to keep the engine running accurately. The exhaust pipe on your ATV, UTV, quad is tuned exactly for the ATV, UTV, quad . Not to mention, it is also custom shaped in the pattern needed to fit your ATV, UTV, quad without interfering with any other components. If this pipe or its silencer is altered in any way, (whether it is bent in an accident or manipulated by you) it can influence the engine's performance. Here are some tips for tweaking your UTV or ATV exhaust:

  1. Correct installation: This is key to the life of the exhaust as well as the life of the engine. Insufficiently installed exhausts could leak and create lean conditions concerning the air fuel mixture. This creates heat and heat destroys engine components.
  2. Proper Jetting: When installing a free flowing exhaust, you need to add more fuel to the mix in order to keep a good air-fuel mixture. Most exhausts will have details giving you to the advised jet numbers for the ATV, UTV, quad the exhaust is built for. This is a baseline and not set in stone, but it is a great place to start.
  3. Silencer Packing: The packing in the silencer plays a critical part in not only silencing the exhaust noise but keeping the exhaust performing properly. Repacking an exhaust each year is key on a ATV, UTV, quad that gets a lot of trail time and every few years on a ATV, UTV, quad that is used seasonally.
  4. Nuts and Bolts: Lastly, be clear the exhaust nuts and bolts are always tight and that the system is sealed properly where gaskets meet hard surfaces.

Choosing the Right Air Filter

There are two fundamental air filter types: paper element filters (such as K&N) and foam filters. It's key to choose the right one for your ATV, UTV, quad. Paper element filters provide great airflow and most times show a dyno benifit. They are the best for ATV's, UTV's, quad's that spend a lot of time in the woods, trails and sand. But when you ride in dusty conditions, every time use an Outerwear or K&N precharger. Without the filter wraps, paper filters can pass fine dust particles, which is why they're not ideal for desert racing or silty conditions. Foam air filters are precribed for desert and extremely dusty conditions. But keep an eye on the cleanliness of the filter as you ride-foam filters can load up with sand and pass some of it into the intake tract. If you're doing sand riding or serious desert, bring an additional clean filter and exchange it out halfway through the day. Dual stage foam filters are remarkable all-around air filters, but don't flow quite as well as the K&N or oiled gauze-type air filters.

Check Your Oil

This looks to be a very simple thing to do but for most in the heat of the moment and the thrill of getting the ATV, UTV, quad loaded or just out of the garage to ride can be go unnoticed. Oil breaks down and keeping the right amount of lubricant in your engine is sometimes NOT as easy as keeping the holes plugged. Oil can be burnt off through warn piston rings and seep out of unwarned compromised gaskets. Make checking your oil every ride, or at least every few rides, as part of your normal routine. Believe it or not you still have to change the oil in your ATV, UTV, quad from time to time. I know most say it can wait, but oil is the life-blood of the motor so keep it fresh and you will be riding a healthy ATV, UTV, quad. Just like your car, regular oil changes will keep your engine running smooth.

Check the Coolant

Coolant in most engines performs several different functions. Most think it simply transfers heat to a radiator for cooling. This is only part of the equation though, as it also lubricates seals and stops rusting inside the engine. Most coolant can be ran for years unless the system becomes compromised with debris from within, or in some cases when the head gasket begins to leak and allows engine oil in.

Replace Your Spark Plug

Installing a new spark plug in your ATV, UTV, quad will bring back the power that can be lost as the plug begins to wear over time. Spark plugs are subject to many things including bad gas or an improperly jetted ATV, UTV, quad. At only about $10, swap out your spark plugs twice a year to make sure the ATV, UTV, quad is functioning precisely, and it will keep the ATV, UTV, quad you love running at top performance.

Check Tire Air Pressure

Your tires are the bond between you and the terrain on which you ride. We all know that if the ATV, UTV, quad cannot grip the terrain or becomes unstable at lower pressure that it can end badly. Be sure to accurately inflate your tires, as this will also help them last longer.
